Portrait of Pope Lucius III. Made in the 18th century in a noble and requiring extraordinary precision copperplate technique. It was probably an illustration placed in the 18th century Encyclopedia.
Composition inscribed in the medallion. The profile view refers to ancient medallions and gems on which Roman emperors were depicted. A characteristic feature of this graphic are beautiful transitions between light and shadow.
Graphics framed in a beautiful, gilded frame, the sides of which are decorated with rich ornaments.
Pope shown in clothes and depiction whose task is to testify to his majesty and power. Pope Lucius III reigned from 1181-1185. He became famous, published on November 4, 1184. in Verona with the bull Ad abolendam haeresim, known as the Charter of the Inquisition. It was then that a program was created for the first time against heretics who, in the event of their unwillingness to convert and abandon their former practices, would be excommunicated and punished by secular authority.
