Description

Superb lithograph under frame on the theme of Christianity depicting a nun in Carmelite dress, haloed, holding in her hands a crucified Christ and a bouquet of white and golden roses. A rosary is also visible on the left.

The portrait is framed by two columns and an arch. We read the inscriptions: “Je veux passer mon ciel faire du bien sur la Terre” (“I want to spend my heaven doing good on Earth”) and “Sainte Thrse de l’Enfant-Jsus” (“Saint Thrse of the Child Jesus”).

This is Saint Thrse of Lisieux, born in 1873, entered the convent/carmel of Lisieux in 1888 and died of tuberculosis in 1897 at the age of 24.
Saint Thrse became very popular after her death following the publication of her writings, including her autobiography “Story of a Soul”.
She was beatified in 1923 and then canonized in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. The basilica of Lisieux was erected in his honor shortly afterwards.

We find among the miracles attributed to Saint Thrse, the healing of the famous singer Edith Piaf: blind at the age of 6 following an inflammation of the cornea, she would have recovered her sight a few days after a pilgrimage in front of the tomb of Saint Therese. from that day until her death, Edith Piaf never ceased to honor Saint Thrse and granted her a prayer before each performance.
