Description

Originally this lamp was a petroleum lamp, over time the mechanism with the wick was modified, it was then electrified to make it more comfortable and modern use; it is prepared for the use of a lampshade, which is not supplied, the body is made of opaline glass blue, it was in use at the time inspired by the color of the eggs of the American robin to obtain that shade of blue; on the lamp were hand painted flowers and fruits, using polychrome enamels; the base is a golden brass casting and finished with chisel; under the base there is a black ceramic element that finishes the whole lamp and makes it more stable. Produced in France in 1880. Opaline is a slightly translucent glass, opacified by phosphates, sodium and calcium chlorides with the addition of tin and talc oxides, thus obtaining various shades of colours from pastel to milk white; opaline glass is much less dense and opaque than milk glass (very similar to porcelain); opaline proper is a French product that was created at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century in imitation of the Murano and German semi-popaque glass of the 17th century and which had its heyday from 1820 to 1870 thanks to the creations of French factories (Baccarat, Saint Louis and Choisy-le-Roy); from the 19th century onwards opaline spread throughout the world with the handcrafted production of everyday objects.
