Description
Item :
Graceful double-handled vase in hard vitrified ceramic, entirely hand-modelled on a lathe and entirely hand-decorated with ibex and floral decorations. Datable to the second half of the 20th century, signed under the base and made by the Ikaros Pottery factory, Rhodes Greece. The decorations are very beautiful, each different from the other, made in full Iznik style. Also particularly beautiful is the effect of the extremely full-bodied and voluminous red enamel, thicker than the decorations, which seem to recede inwards compared to the red enamel, an extremely particular effect and certainly aesthetic.
Information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
The Icarus Rhodes factory is one of the most important and famous Greek ceramic factories, mainly due to the fact that with the start of the war, in the first decades of the 20th century, many artists from Vietri from the German period moved to Rhodes and created objects of the highest artistic level. with the end of the war almost all of them returned to Italy but the factory continued to produce artistic objects in the Iznik style with the quality and style of the Vietri school which the workers had nevertheless absorbed, a style which made it famous throughout the world. world. Iznik ceramics take their name from the city of their origins, Iznik (ancient Nicaea) of Bithynia, in today’s northwestern Turkey, where they were produced from the 15th to the 17th century. The characteristics of these ceramics were their bright colors and their central motifs depicting birds, peacocks, and flowers. They were generally used for wall coverings, vases, crockery and other everyday objects, but also for decoration of Christian temples. Iznik ceramics were highly prized by the Ottoman Imperial Court and the rich families of Constantinople while, during the 19th century, they were highly sought after by foreign collectors and travellers.
