Description

Creating a wonderful display for Oysters or sea food this French Majolica oyster plate in lustrous deep colouring, by the well thought of maker Sarreguemines, circa 1890. Six scallop shell shaped wells surround a raised centre condiment well for sauce or lemons and are edged in a sienna glaze, which graduates to a light salmon colour towards their centres. The glazing caries slight crazing which adds to the patina of aged related wear. The scallops surround a raised centre condiment well for sauce or lemons. The scallop wells are arranged on a bed of seaweed glazed in a rich turquoise and lime green. Stamped Sarreguemines with the makers mark, and impressed mould numbers on the verso. Multiples are available. All examples are in excellent antique condition. Majolica was first introduced by the Minton factory at the Great Exhibition in 1851, majolica’s popularity soon meant that it was being made by numerous manufacturers in England and, later on in the 19th Century by continental and transatlantic makers. Brightly coloured and exuberantly modelled, majolica reflects the times interests in historical and exotic subject matter, the natural world, new foods and popular culture.
