Description
A large flame mahogany writing slope C.1860 with brass binding, attractive lock escutcheon and blank cartouche. The box is in good condition and offers the usual pen tray, ink wells and secret compartment, together with working lock and key.
A good original example, the interior has a leather and gilt tooled edge inset, which appears to be original and in very good condition. A pen tray and ink wells to the ends. There is a pull slip to one side and brass catches to the other to open both upper and lower sections. Inside, there is a secret compartment to one side, and letter storage to the other. The secret compartment works on a spring loaded fascia, and is opened by raising the left hand side divider next to the ink well, revealing two drawers. The writing slope even has the original key, which is in working order.
The slope has the original patina which has a wonderful warm colour. Made in solid mahogany, it has highly figured flame mahogany veneers to the exterior.
Overall in very good clean condition, showing some light marks and signs of use as expected. There is some ink staining to the inside space, one of the secret drawers appears to be missing, the silver plated tops to the ink well have worn and there is a knock to one of the glass bases. The letter holder has a break in the fabric. An area of the brass band on the top is slightly raised. Please refer to the photographs. The underside baize has been replaced at some point.
When in use it is 53cm deep.
