Description
A 20th Century “Beware of the Motor” enamel sign. with pointing finger pictorial. The earliest versions of this sign are believed to date from the pre-1905 period, by repute formerly on display adjacent to Hyde Park, London.
The “Beware of the Motor” sign is a vintage safety warning that harks back to an era when the motor vehicle was a new and often unpredictable presence on the roads. Popular in the early 20th century, these signs were designed to alert pedestrians and horse-drawn vehicle drivers to the potential dangers posed by motor cars, which were becoming increasingly common. with its bold lettering and stark warnings, the sign captured the growing tension between traditional modes of transport and the emerging automotive revolution. Today, it serves as a nostalgic piece of motoring history, evoking the curiosity and caution of a time when the motor car was still seen as a mysterious and sometimes hazardous machine.
