A burnished bronze sculpture depicting head of woman (Nina) signed Gemito Galleria Chiurazzi. The woman with a little sad expression is the wife of the artist who portrays her with a veil in the head. Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, July 16, 1852 – Naples, March 1, 1929) was an Italian sculptor, designer and goldsmith. Self -taught, largely, and impatient to the academic canons, Gemito was formed by drawing from the alleys of the historic center of Naples and the sculptures of the Archaeological Museum. His prolific artistic activity, which led him to the height of success at the Salons of Paris in 1876-77, was interrupted due to an intimate intellectual crisis, because of which he sees himself from the world for eighteen years; He resumed public life only in 1909, and then turned off twenty years later. Gemitian production includes vigorous drawings, terracotta figures and a large number of sculptures, all portraying with a high pictorial intensity of Neapolitan popular scenes; Among his main works you can remember the fisherman, the Acquaiolo (the original silver melted in the Museum of the Cenedese of Vittorio Veneto), the statue of Carlo V on the facade of the Royal Palace of Naples, the gypsy and the self -portraits.
